Primary Purpose:

 

Ensure safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route. Operate school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or other designated location.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B)

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Must be 18 years of age

Ability to pass alcohol and drug test

Ability to complete required bus driver safety training

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

Ability to communicate effectively

Knowledge of student discipline procedure

Ability to manage student behavior

Ability to operate bus

Have a safe record of vehicle driving

Supervision/Monitor Responsibilities:

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Vehicle Operation

 

  1. Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.

 

  1. Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities.

 

  1. Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs.

 

  1. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete required reports.

 

  1. Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.

 

  1. Drives courteously and defensively.

 

  1. Departs bus garage at predetermined time and makes periodic time checks at designated points to arrive at pick-up points on schedule, and to adjust schedule for inclement weather.

  1. Keep records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and writes down the number of students delivered to school each morning and those taken home in the afternoon.

 

  1. Certifies records of out-of-town travel made by buses driven by him or her

 

  1. Stays with bus and students in the event of bus breakdown or accident; sends word to Maintenance Director, and assumes responsibility for students until they are delivered to their home.

 

Student Management

 

  1. Make sure that all children are safely secured in child restraint systems if appropriate.

 

  1. Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street.

 

  1. Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior while on bus.

 

  1. Maintain discipline; report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.

 

  1. Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.

 

  1. Keeps the principal of each campus informed regarding all important matters concerning its respective students.

 

  1. Gives special help to students with disabilities.

 

Safety

 

  1. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.

 

  1. Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.

 

  1. Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crow bar, and reflector.

 

  1. Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisory of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.

 

  1. Install snow chains during inclement weather.

 

  1. Report any hazardous conditions along the route.

  1. Performs custodial work when not driving bus.

 

 

  1. Performs other duties as assigned by the Maintenance and Transportation Director and/or designee.

 

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

None.

Equipment Used:

 

School bus, safety equipment (flares, reflective signs), fire extinguisher.

 

Working Conditions:

 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control. Continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions. Work outside and inside;  moderate exposure to extreme temperature (hot) and vehicle fumes.
